Skin and Bone

Publication date: November 12th, 2019
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

I’d do anything for him, even become the woman he loves…

I tried my best for years, but all he ever wanted was for her to come back. So bit-by-bit, I evolved, transforming into someone he could love. But he didn’t take the bait until I went all the way.

I became her.

Now everything is perfect. We’re happy. So in love. And he doesn’t suspect a thing.

Someone claiming my name sent me a video. It looks to be me, returning to my hometown, reconnecting with my high school boyfriend, Ezra. Those are my clothes, that’s my laugh, and that’s my face.

She took my freedom next. And then she made me watch as she took over my entire life, fooling everyone like a perfect chameleon. It’s clear what she wants, and Ezra is all too quick to take me back.

Only one person seems to notice something is off. Ezra’s brother, Davis—the last person I called. There’s a certain darkness in Davis’ eyes, and he’s not the type to let up until he gets his answers.

Somehow, I’ll make her pay. This imposter is going to regret the day she ever took the name Sawyer James.

Eight surgeries, twelve hair dye experiments, 1,834 hours of video observation, two years of yoga practice to try to make up that extra inch of height, and the public loss of gluten.
That’s what I’ve gone through for love.  That’s everything I’ve given up–all the money I’ve spent, all the hours I’ve invested–to finally be with the man I’ve loved for more than a decade.
They say nothing worth having comes easy.
          Everything comes with a price.
I’ve paid my dues.  I’ve been more patient than anyone could ever comprehend.
And now it’s finally my time.
I step from the closet into the bathroom.  I check my makeup.  What the surgeries couldn’t accomplish is made up for with some well-practiced cosmetic techniques.  The contour is just right.  The eyebrow lift did exactly what was needed.  My jaw is still sore, even though all of the swelling and bruising has finally gone away.
But as I apply a coat of lipstick—Apple Sunrise, her default color—I smile at myself.
Even my teeth required altering.  Thirty-five thousand dollars, and they look just right; are just the right shade of white.
          It’s perfect.
          I’m perfect.
I am my own creation and I have to admire my hard work.
          It’s brilliant.
I press my lips together, blowing my own reflection a kiss, and step out of the bathroom.  I cut through the nearly empty bedroom and aim for the dining room.  My laptop sits on it, a cheap piece of technology, because after today, it’s going in the crusher of the cement company down the road.
          Can’t leave any evidence behind.
Which is tragic, because really, this amounts to the same amount of work as a doctoral degree.
It’s okay though.  I’ll take the loss, so long as it gets me the prize, the reward for all my hard work.
I open the web browser and sign into my email.

Just seeing the signature at the top of the page feels good.  My insides flutter in excitement.  Goosebumps wash over my skin.
Sawyer James at IMT Homes, I type in the address.  I attach just one file and leave the body of the email empty.  In the subject line, I type It was never really about you.
But that’s a lie.  She may not be my main target, my main motivation, but there are fourteen years’ worth of resentment that brought us to this point.
My gaze re-focuses on the screen, and once more, I see my reflection.
Perfect, soft blonde hair.  Blue eyes that border on green, thanks to contacts that are purely for color, not prescription.
A pretty face with hope in her eyes.
Here we are.  One last out before it all goes down.
One last opportunity to change my mind.
I see myself smile in the screen.
Not a chance.  I’ve worked too hard for this.
          I press SEND and smile.

I stood in the shadows of the balcony in a room full of people in London’s upper class, a glass of champagne in my hand, my eyes following the path of a young woman as she drifted from group to group—her strawberry lips plump and perfect for a summer night’s kiss. I fantasized about what it might feel like to taste her lips beneath the moonlight.
At times I caught the woman glancing at me, a shy smile on her face.
Beneath the ornate feline mask, I caught eyes colored with facial shadow, half-lidded with as much desire as I felt welling up within me. The glances and flirting gestures occurred so often through the night I could take no more and approached her.
The woman covered her face with a frilly, cream fan, gesturing her head towards the opened window panes leading to the granite balcony.
The satin curtains danced in the warmth of the breeze, their soft whooshes unheard by the gossiping guests as the woman moved through them.
With immortal grace, I glided through the bodies, refusing advances from bourgeoisie ladies whose breasts struggled to remain hidden behind their laced corsets.
When I reached the young woman, she stood staring out at the lavish gardens below. My eyes never left her face, entranced by her porcelain skin almost shining in the moon’s light.
Below, gurgling water echoed from the fountain in the middle of the stone pathway, surrounded by beautiful flowers blooming, permeating the air with sensual smells.
“Greetings, my lady.” I took her silken gloved hand and placed a kiss on the back of her knuckles. My hazel eyes locked on her bright green gaze.
We appeared to be studying one another. The sounds of the party faded into nothingness the further we drifted into our own world.
Thoughts of what she might be thinking ran through my mind along with concerns I often held during such encounters.  Did she fall victim to my wiles? My natural seduction or did she feel a natural attraction?
A brief sense of ache pushed at the walls of my beating heart. I forced the thoughts away. It could not be. If my seduction did indeed affect her, she would not have teased me as much as she did. Attraction would have been instant as it had been with those other women from the party who shoved their large bosoms in my face as I walked by.
“To you as well, sir,” She replied, gesturing a slight nod.
Her bright smile set my heart ablaze with the desire. I gathered my will and requested her to dance with me, an offer she agreed to, never letting go of the mischievous tease of a grin lighting her lips.
I led us to the ballroom where I proceeded to guide her through the most graceful dance. My hand held firm around her tiny waist while her frilly dress followed each majestic spin with the rhythm of the music.
During a dip, I ventured to ask her what her name could be.
The woman giggled, fanning herself and requesting some fresh air in light of so much dancing. I obliged her and guided her back to the balcony.
In the distance, I could hear the bubbling sound of the water cascading in the fountain. All around the smell of flowers drifted in the cool summer breeze. To give her a rest, I helped her sit on one of the marble benches, joining her.
I repeated my request to know her name.
She pushed one of the loosened curls of her bronze hair away from her face. Her green eyes threatening to delve into the depths of my soul. “I am Annabelle Price. May I ask your namel, my Lord?”
“Jonathan Holloway. It is my greatest pleasure to make your acquaintance, Ms. Price.”
Annabelle giggled. “Annabelle, please. To you as well, Mr. Holloway.”
As she had done with me, I corrected her to use my first name.
Little had I known that night would lead to more meetings in the near future only to end in a tragedy which would begin my descent into the darkness of vengeance.

It's Been A While...
November 12, 20190 Comments
I haven't made a proper personal post in a while.

A lot has happened this past couple of years. As of June 2019, I graduated with my Media Communications B.S. degree & in August began working towards my Public Relations M.A. degree.

I have not given my blog (& many other things) the kind of attention that I truly desire to in quite some time. I decided to take some time to really think about what I wanted to do & where I wanted everything to go. After thinking about it & discussing some things with my brother I finally set forward with a plan.

For those of you who do not know, I use to talk about one day starting a YouTube channel for my blog. This is still going to happen, I am not giving up on this. It would be a joint part of my blog & play a big role in the future of Finding Magic In Books.

I will also be putting some more focus on my writing and art. These will both be gradually showing up a bit more down the road. I will share more when the time comes.

I have also been lacking in my reviews & reading. By this, I mean that I have not been devoting enough time to reading certain books that I REALLY want to start on & essentially review. I would let review requests & tours take priority & it is really affecting me when it comes to my reading. I will NOT stop taking requests or participating in tours, but I will be taking a step back & not doing as much at once.

Along with the YouTub channel, I have been wanting to host giveaways as a way to thank my followers & share some books that I enjoy with you all. I also have a few other additions I wish to add/create as the opportunities become available.

If you would like to help by supporting Finding Magic In Books you can do so by following on Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, & Facebook. You can even become a Patron or support me through Ko-fi. This will help with funding the giveaways & starting the YouTube channel.

Thank you for all your continued support.

When you're working with the Roman god of chaos, things can always get worse.

Bacchae, the supernatural creatures that spawned vampire lore, are real. For the last several thousand years, they’ve kept to the shadows. UNTIL NOW.

When the worst and most powerful of the Bacchae murders someone she loves, graduate student Serafina Finch, now aided by the ancient god Bacchus, sets out on a journey in search of new allies. They must act quickly before Danae, the Bacchae witch claiming to be Queen, figures out a way to restore the Bacchae to their full powers.

Sera is hellbent on killing Danae before she devastates the mortal world, and it becomes a race against time when the queen reveals her own dark alliances. Sera thinks things can’t get any worse, but when you're working with the Roman god of chaos, things can always get worse.

“Bacchus created us in his image—chaos. And chaos is what we will give them.”

HER MAJESTY'S FURY is the second book in the Immortal Relics series, a New Adult Urban Fantasy adventure. Fans of Deborah Harkness, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Roman mythology will love this blend of magic, mayhem, and wry humor.

A few hours later, as sunlight started to drift up over the horizon, a soft scratching sound came from the back door. Renee was still sleeping, so Sera set her cup of coffee on the kitchen table before approaching the door. She pulled the blinds back. A small, dark-skinned boy, who might have been in his early teens, stared back at her.
She gave him a questioning look.
Let us in, let us in, or we’ll blow your house down, a snickering voice echoed around her head.
Who are you? she sent her thought back.
Ah! So the rumors of your Gift are true. Your canine friend talked of a fight? We’re in. She could almost see the grinning smile in the shadows of her mind.
You didn’t answer my question, she said.
I am Eshu. So matter-of-fact, so not what she was looking for.
Sera muttered under her breath. Damn gods.

About the Author

Stephanie Mirro's lifelong love of ancient mythology led to majoring in the Classics in college, which wasn't quite as much fun as writing her own mythology stories as she did as a child. But that education, combined with an overactive imagination and being an avid fantasy reader, resulted in a writing career.

Starting her days with coffee and ending them with wine means Stephanie can usually be found juggling household chores, keeping the kids alive, and trying to write, edit, publish, and market the stories that haunt her dreams.

Born and raised in Southern Arizona, Stephanie now resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, two kids, and two furbabies. This thing called “seasons” is still magical.

Cover Reveal: Fae Curse by Eve A. Hunt
November 05, 20190 Comments

Fae Curse
by Eve A. Hunt
Publication date: January 3rd, 2020
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

What do sexy fae lords, a vampire assassin, and a TV baking show have in common?

Yours truly.

Yeah no, I did not plan this.

After scoring first in the show, I opened a bakery with my bestie and planned to live a long life riding my motorcycle and shoving chocolate croissants into my face hole.

But when a castle full of ridiculously gorgeous immortals showed up in my small town south of Nashville, my life changed.

A lot. Like a lot, a lot.

Because of a five hundred year old curse, the immortals can’t leave the castle without turning to ash. But when the most powerful fae lord uses his seductive power to lure me closer—planning to psychically feed on my aura—he successfully steps out of the castle for the first time.

Now the fae want more than a taste of my aura. They want to use all of my blood to break the curse. I’m pretty sure the vamp just wants me for dessert, which is painfully ironic. And until I figure out how to throw the immortals back into whatever magical hole they crawled out of, they will wreak murderous havoc on my hometown.

I don’t want to go down as a sacrifice to save everyone. As far as I know there aren’t any pumpkin muffins in the afterlife.

If only this life were as simple as a biscuit recipe…

If you are a fan of fated mates, enemies to lovers, and kickass heroines, you'll love this series! Read the first five chapters for FREE here.

Congrats! You are in on a secret...

Blitz: Slaying Monsters for the Feeble by Annette Marie + Giveaway
November 04, 20190 Comments

Slaying Monsters for the Feeble
by Annette Marie
(The Guild Codex: Demonized #2)
Published by: Dark Owl Fantasy Inc.
Publication date: November 1st, 2019
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

I’m bound to a demon.

For my entire life, I avoided magic at all costs. Now, I’m responsible for a demon who wields magic more powerful than the toughest mage or sorcerer.

Demons are evil.

That’s what my textbooks say. That’s what I see. He’s ruthless, he’s temperamental, he’s cold. But he protects me without fail. I wonder if he’s hiding a heart behind his hostility.

My demon is a monster.

Heartless or not, my contract with him is illegal and beyond dangerous. Together, we need to find a way to send him back to his own world before anyone discovers our secret. If that wasn’t difficult enough, there’s another problem:

My demon isn’t the only monster I should be worried about.

From the author of The Guild Codex: Spellbound comes a new series that will plunge an unprepared young woman into the darkest magic of the mythic world.

I dashed into the bathroom, pulling the infernus out of my sweater with one hand.

“Zylas,” I said breathlessly. “Come out.”

The silver pendant glowed. Red light spilled down, then expanded into Zylas’s shape. As his body solidified in front of me, his dark eyes gazed into mine—then he crumpled.

I grabbed him, gasping at his weight, and he clutched the towel rack for balance. It tore off the wall. As he staggered, Amalia dove into the bathroom and braced him from behind. Supporting him between us, Amalia and I pulled him over to the tub and tried to ease him down, but he was too heavy. He slipped backward and fell into the tub, his legs hooked over the edge and elbows smacking into the opposite side with hollow thuds.

“Sorry, Zylas,” I panted. “Amalia, get the hot water on.”

She spun the tap and water blasted from the showerhead, spraying across him. His dark eyes went wide.

“Cold!” he gasped, seizing the tub’s edge. With sudden strength, he hauled himself up.

“It’ll get warm in a minute!” I exclaimed. Amalia and I caught his shoulders and held him back. The last thing we needed was for him to collapse on the floor. “Just wait—”

He grabbed the front of my shirt and tried to pull himself out of the water—almost yanking me down on top of him.

“Idiot demon!” Amalia shoved him under the spray. He landed hard, water drenching him. “Would you toughen up for a damn sec—”

Zylas’s head lolled back, half-lidded eyes emptying as though a light had been flicked off. He went limp.

My heart gave one panicked lurch and stopped. “Turn off the water!”

Amalia wrenched on the tap. The water cut off.

“Zylas?” Putting a knee on the tub’s edge, I pressed a hand to his cheek, then patted it gently. No
reaction. I held my fingers over his nose and mouth, lightheaded with relief when I felt his breath.

Amalia leaned over his other side. “I think he’s unconscious.” Her stunned stare turned to me. “We just knocked out a demon with cold water.
