1. What inspired you
to write this series?
When I was a child,
I suffered from severe night terrors. Although most children grow out of this, I
did not, and I struggled with understanding the difference between reality and
my dreams. The Timely Death Trilogy was inspired by a series of dreams that I
had between 14 and 16 years old. They began as a man visiting me at night, but
- in the end - I started writing the trilogy to emotionally express the
feelings I had about it. I actually shared a real excerpt from my diary
before: http://shannonathompson.com/2013/11/15/my-dream-goodreads-extras/
2. What are your
plans for your writing?
I currently have
three novels out, a short story, and a collection of poems. As of now, I am
planning on publishing the first book in a new series later this year. Shortly
after that, Death Before Daylight - the last installment of
The Timely Death Trilogy- will be released. From there, we will be on an
adventure, but I would love to share all types of my writing, including genres
I haven't published before. My ultimate goal is to provide
readers with stories that they can complement their everyday lives. As a
writer, I strive to break down stereotypes and archetypes. For instance,
the dark and the light are flipped in The Timely Death Trilogy. The Dark is
good, and the Light is evil. I also have a character named Crystal
who dresses like a “punk” - but she wants to be a journalist, she loves
glitter, and she can’t wait for school events. Clothes should never define
who you are. Your actions and ambition should.
3. Do you have
a specific writing style?
So far, all of my
published novels are written in two perspectives - the male protagonist and the
female protagonist tell their side of the story. I did this for many
reasons, but I mainly did this because I think YA fiction often writes off
the male as this mysterious guy that shows loving affection every now and
then. I wanted to give that man a voice and show why he does what he does.
But don’t worry! Tension and mystery is definitely still
present.
4. How did you come
up with the title?
The trilogy is
written in three different psychological types. The first novel is about the
Dark, the second is about being human in a paranormal world, and the third
is about the Light. The first novel, Minutes Before Sunset, refers to the
moment before the humans transform into their paranormal selves. It represents
their desire and need to be in the Dark as well as many other aspects that
would spoil it if I explained anymore. Fun fact: every novel has the next
novel’s title in it, and it symbolizes what the next novel will be about. For
instance, you can find the phrase “seconds before sunrise” in Minutes
Before Sunset.
5. Is there anything
you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Between writing as a
female and a male, I actually struggle more with the female voice. I have
yet to fully understand this, but I am excited for my next novel to release
because it is told from one female’s perspective, and - in many ways - it was
the first time I overcame that hurdle.
6. Do you have any
advice for other writers?
My personal mantra
is to “write with passion; succeed with self-discipline.” It reminds me
that my love for writing is the only thing that can and should push me forward.
Once we - as writers - accept our passion, no amount of negative feedback will
stop us, but we need to put the work in to succeed and grow, too.
7. Do you have
anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Other than a giant
