Summary

Dear Thomas,

I know you're angry. It's true, I was sent to expose your mentor as a fraud illusionist, and instead I have put your secret in jeopardy. I fear I have even put your life in jeopardy. For that I can only beg your forgiveness. I've fallen for you. You know I have. And I never wanted to create a rift between us, but if it means protecting you from those who wish you dead—I'll do it. I'll do anything to keep you safe, whatever the sacrifice. Please forgive me for all I've done and what I'm about to do next. I promise, it's one magic trick no one will ever see coming.

Love,
Saverio

My Review
3.5 Stars

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Illusions was not the story I was expecting when I first received it. The writing consists entirely of letters and diary entries. Yeah, I did not see that coming and this is my first book written in such a style. That being said, this was a unique experience for me.

I really enjoyed the overall storyline and the relationship between Thomas and Saverio. The writing style allows you to truly connect with the characters and their thoughts. Sadly, this writing style also left you lacking on information about the world and the magic. This lack a detail did leave me a bit unsatisfied but did not take away from my enjoyment of the story. The ending of Illusions did invoke a few tears out of me. It is not sunshine and rainbows at the end but instead bittersweet.

I was conflicted about how I would rate this story. While I thoroughly enjoy the basis of the story and the characters, the writing style put me off a bit. I found myself losing track at times and having to go back at certain points while reading. It did not take away from the story, but I did find it to be a nuisance. Overall, I did enjoy my time reading this and in the end I feel that is what matters the most.
