About the Book

Fifteen-year-old Nara Dall has never liked secrets. Yet it seems that her life has been filled with them, from the ugly scar on her back to the strange powers she possesses. Her mysterious father refuses to say anything about her origins, and soon, she and her best friend must attend the announcement ceremony, in which youths are tested for a magical gift.

A gifted youth has not been announced in the poor village of Dimmitt for decades. When Nara uncovers the reason, she uses her own powers to make things right. The decision sets her on a path of danger, discovery, and a search for the divine. In the process, she learns the truth about herself and uncovers the biggest secret of all: the power of broken people.

My Review
4 Stars

I am reviewing this book for a book tour but I purchased it on my own beforehand.

Simply put, Looking for Dei follows Nara, a girl would possess multiple magical powers while most people in her would only have one and some special few have two. I found it to be a quick read, not because it's short but due to events seeming to move along at a fast pace. This did not take away from my enjoyment of the book, I found it to be fitting for the story.

I enjoyed Nara's character, she wants to help her town but in doing so ends up on the run with her adoptive father and close friend. The development of certain characters was interesting to watch and there were times I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the information given on a character. Getting to read the story from multiple characters' points of view helped to bring more to the story for me. It felt like I was getting a fuller picture of what was going on.

The world building was probably my favorite part. I love when so much thought is put into creating the world of a story, it makes it that much more engaging and realistic. This type of detail helps to bring the story and characters to a completely different level when reading. From the magic system to the history, the details in this story simply take from the page a pull you into its world.

Overall, I deeply enjoyed this Looking for Dei and hope to read more from this series in the future.

About David
