Synopsis
On the island of Bellona, they worship the sun. Seventeen-year-old Veda understands that keeping the sun content ensures plentiful crops, peace and harmony, and a thriving economy. But as a member of the Basso class, she never reaps those benefits.
Life as a Basso is one fraught with back-breaking work and imposing rules. Her close friendship with Nico is Veda’s one saving grace in a cruel world where the division between her people and the ruling Dogio is as wide and winding as the canals that snake through their island.
But when Veda’s grandfather is chosen as the next sacrificial offering to keep the sun’s favor, Veda is forced to see the injustice of her world. Turning away from the sun means she must join the night—and an underground revolution she’s been taught to fear all her life.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
Beware the Night attracted me because of its interesting description of a world where some people worship the Sun and others reside in the Night. There is a divide between the two different beliefs (obviously). Those who worship the Sun are taught that the Night is evil and that the Sun protects them from it. I found this idea to be intriguing, so I decided to jump into the pages and see what it had in store.
This is not one of that fast reads that some people (myself included) enjoy at times. There is a slow burn and buildup through the beginnings of the story but once you get through it, it is completely worth it. I did find this a bit difficult due to trying to overcome a reading slump that I had been in for a while but that did not stop me. Be prepared for plot twists and betrayals because Beware the Night certainly has them, while some I saw coming others took me by surprise. Due to reading many books throughout the years I really appreciate it when a book can catch me off guard and surprise me. It is not something that I experience much anymore so when I do, I relish in it, even when it hurts my heart.
Veda was a character that I really enjoyed getting to know along with our other main leads. I will not go too much into because I fear I will spoil it by giving too much away. I almost did so the other night with my brother and felt terrible about it. All in all, this is one that I see having the potential to be quite the series. I look forward to seeing where the next book takes the story and characters.
